ATMEL ADDS LODE DSP TO ASIC LIBRARIES SAN JOSE, CALIF.,
Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Atmel Corporation (Nasdaq: ATML) announced today that it has enlarged its digital signal processing offering with the addition of the Lode(TM) DSP core and related software developed by the TCSI Corporation (Nasdaq: TCSI) of Berkeley.
Lode is an advanced 16 bit digital signal processor core designed for optimal performance in speech and voice communications applications. The Lode core architecture efficiently performs the baseband functions -- speech compression, forward error correction and modem functions -- required in digital cellular standards.
The TCSI Lode DSP core is a general-purpose digital signal processor that provides two multiplier-accumulators to reduce power consumption by effectively cutting cycle times in half. It provides comprehensive software and development tools.
"This DSP engine is a perfect fit for our customer's needs in telecommunications, and complements our current microcontroller and DSP core offerings," explained John Bryant, Atmel's director of marketing for complex logic and microcontrollers. "The addition of the Lode DSP core and its extensive software base broadens the markets we can serve with digital signal processing," Bryant added.
"The Lode standard is extremely powerful and flexible providing an array of features and services," stated Hatch Graham, senior vice president and general manager for TCSI. "We are delighted that a world leader such as Atmel has selected the Lode core. It is a testimony to the flexibility and power of this core as well as to the quality of TCSI's application software," he added.
Earlier this month, Atmel completed an agreement with the DSP Group of Santa Clara, California, covering its OakDSPCore(TM) and PineDSPCore(TM) and their accompanying instruction sets. These 16 bit general-purpose DSP modules offer both low-power and low-voltage operation.
All three core architectures are expected to be available to Atmel's customers through its gate array and cell-based circuit libraries by the end of the year. All three cores may be embedded in standard products by Atmel at a later date.
