'Despite all the gloom and doom, one mutual fund manager sees a unique investment opportunity.

Joseph E. Besecker, founder and president of Lancaster-based Emerald Asset Management, has created a new high-risk niche, or sector, mutual fund aptly named The Year 2000 (Y2K) Fund.

"When I first started reading about this problem, I thought it was all a bunch of hooey," Besecker said. "Even if you could make money over the next 2 years, what happens after the year 2000?

"What we found out was the problem continues to grow, and the work by companies who are developing ways to correct this will still be needed after the year 2000."

According to the fund prospectus, Emerald portfolio managers will target public companies working to develop solutions to the Y2K problem for both software and software.

The fund will exist as a niche fund until July 1999, then switch to a technology fund, but will still focus on companies working on the Y2K problem.

Besecker said his company is so concerned about the Y2K problem that the firm has dedicated an entire segment to the problem at its fifth annual Groundhog Day Investment Seminar for clients today in Philadelphia.'
