I worked with a number of Chinese descendants from the Bay Area and they would talk about going to Chinese school after their regular school during the week and on Saturdays. Education is everything and failure is not an option. Was there a Korean equivalent in NYC as you grew up?
Yes, there were Korean equivalents. Almost exactly the way you described Chinese schools.

I remember having to attend a Korean school every Saturday morning. Obviously it wasn't my first choice of activity, but I did what my parents told me to do.
