What you haven't learned is that Texas is nearly evenly divided between progressive and Republican interests. The progressive cities are growing, but the rules are still made by the energy industry. There is also a large hispanic population, which contrary to the expectations of the mainstream Democrats, is mostly interested in keeping it's culture as it is, and therefore fear progressive-diversive agendas just as much as they do anti-immigrant agendas. It's not an easy place to stereotype.
