I would guess that a study of the oldest galaxies might lead to some answers as to what is outside the universe. If our universe is pushing it's way against or through some other universe then the traces of that interaction are most likely found on the matter that first started pushing.

There is a train of thought, however, that all matter is pushing against the limits of the universe. Gravity is then just the effect of mass shoving against the former boundary (in a higher dimension). In such a case you could find the effects of the interaction everywhere (as gravity) . If so, then fluxuations in gravity could be an indication of structure found in area outside our universe.
