They had a joint program with UNC Chapel Hill. They had several accidental exposures in the last five years while they were working on the virus. Even so, there probably wasn't enough to make people sick and certainly wasn't enough to spark an outbreak. Almost all the mutations in the last year have had to do with the spike protein RBD. There is a long way to go to match samples at either lab with the known genome sequence for Covid. Unless you assume they made every modification in the right direction to reverse engineer Covid, the only plausible way for it to have occurred would be for the lab sample of the virus to have been intentionally combined genetically with a mammal like civet cat or pangolin that has a lot of genes in common with humans. So the search is for such a mammal in the wild carrying a close copy of the Covid virus.
