Ultimately though, they are going to need to ramp up their 200mm yields at Mohawk faster than their competitors can ramp their yields of 200mm boules.

A high yielding 150mm line will outperform a poor yielding 200mm line. The Mohawk fab reminds me a lot of Finisar with their Sherman fab. They went bold and spent a large amount of money on refurbishing/equipping a fab to increase wafer diameter, similar size fab to what Cree is building, and couldn't ramp 150mm GaAs. With potentially multiple end customers eventually forcing a bailout.

The top epi machine supplier for conductive SiC is LPE and they only started shipping 200mm at the end of last year. There is at least one in Catania. If Cree has one that was quite a quick decision. While Aixtron has epi machines that can be configured for 200mm SiC, most use them for RF.

STM will probably run their 200mm pilot line until they know they have good yields. Infineon didn't seem to be in a rush with the video you recently posted. Cree seems to be betting the company on an unproven process without any pressure to do so.
