There are agreements and disagreements always.

<<The people of Iran don't determine policy in Iran...>>

I could tell you a real story about Iranians. Funny as anything now, but it was challenging times when it all happened.

They are an ancient race of a civilized people. The Persians. One of them, a deserter during the Iran Iraq War was an illegal immigrant in the UK and ended up staying at my Parents house, along with a group of other Iranians. My parents were not just kind hearted, but also stuck firmly to their principles in times of adversity. The situation went on for years, no financial support anywhere. My parents were not wealthy enough to support the group, and were not compensated for in any way. It was a complicated story, money was available but was locked up in the Iran Iraq war. It was a case of "everyone won" in the end, which of course was an outstanding result.

I visited the household briefly at the time, and was all for chucking the deserter out on the street. He was a nice guy, but my opinion was that my parents could not shoulder the pains of the world by themselves, especially without support. The group were mainly kids btw, they were nearly old enough to be shoved into the front lines if they had been shipped back to Iran.

Anyhow, this deserter guy was quite the diplomat, he could bull chit his way out of anything. Amazing guy, and he remained with my parents of course, My objections were over ruled. He has a senior position on political studies at a UK university now. His brother lives in the USA, very smart guy, and advises the USA government on computer stuff and security I think. Haven't looked him up in years. Maybe he knows the ins and outs of the 2020 election? Wouldn't surprise me at all.

I wouldn't cross off the Iranians at being unable to become capable diplomats and influencers in the ME. It's not all nukes and whacko clerics with AK47's at all. There is a lot more then what we see and hear in the newspapers.

Last night I bumped into a friend. She owns a flat but the neighbors above are a tad uncouth and rowdy. She will keep the flat and has bought another property. She has been able to rent the property to Syrian refugees, with council support. I'm guessing they won't mind the noisy neighbors so much. It might help them down from the racket they got all the time in Syria. Smart business lady. Hooted with laughter when I told my parents story.
