The Lakers Won One Game. Now They Might Win the NBA Title.

LeBron James beat his rival Stephen Curry to get the Lakers into the playoffs. In this chaotic season when nobody knows anything, they could be champions as a No. 7 seed.

One of the strangest things about this NBA season is that the Phoenix Suns were one of the best teams. This was a franchise that hadn’t made the playoffs in more than a decade, and now they are the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference. It was the league’s most unexpected development this side of the New York Knicks.

Their reward for such a fantastic season: LeBron James, Anthony Davis and the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers in the first round of the playoffs.

It took the Lakers beating the Golden State Warriors on Wednesday night, 103-100, in a game dripping with the spectacular theatrics the NBA has come to expect from the league’s defining rivalry between Stephen Curry and LeBron James.

This chapter required LeBron to channel his inner Steph. James broke a tie with less than one minute left by hitting a fadeaway, desperation three from 34 feet with a swollen eye and Curry’s hand in his face. It was his longest made field goal of the season—and the last basket of the night. The Lakers were so petrified of Curry they doubled him before he crossed halfcourt on the final possession. The greatest shooter in history couldn’t get a shot off, and the Lakers survived and advanced to the first round.

In one night they went from possibly not making the playoffs to perhaps being the favorite to make the Finals. The only reason the Lakers happened to be in a position of vulnerability is that James and Davis missed extended time with injuries this season. As long as they’re healthy, so are their title hopes.
