I forget which component you're talking about. Crypto mining is definitely part of the puzzle of the shortages but not the main driver imo, except maybe for a few specific SKUs in GPUs.

For example, the new Playstation and Xbox consoles are regularly out of stock at big box stores and could be considered in a modest shortage overall. Another example is the yet to be released new iPad Pro which is delayed due to a shortage of the mini-LEDs used to show it's purportedly amazing screen. How either of those relate to crypto is beyond me. Backups at TSM make more sense and that applies across many companies and products. Unsure if confirmed but read somewhere Apple might be delayed on more M1 ARM chips, likely made at TSM. And sadly new capacity cannot be created overnight. I don't know what the lead time is... if you rush it through it's likely a few years faster than a new copper or silver or gold mine, ~4-5 years?

Lately it is automobile manufactures slowing down or laying people off due to a lack of CPUs and ICs and most of those are lower end and not fancy AMD Ryzen or Nvidia GTX.
