I doubt they will figure out that the owl is fake. I have one on the edge of my roof to deter squirrels from jumping onto my roof via a tree next to the house. They never get closer than the fence, about 8 feet away, and have never touched that tree since then. This worked for years.

I have thought of adding one at the chimney metal flashing to deter flickers (woodpeckers), but they are only annoying during mating season. I have found other methods to stop them from attacking my siding so I let them bang away for a month or so. Minor annoyance.

This is western Oregon.
