It's been a brilliant marketing strategy for PP. While not buying out auctions, for the past 20 years at least they've bid up rare examples and add them to their museum in Geneva, Switzerland. That they so actively support the rare auction pieces with high bids is great free advertising for their currently and often, arguably, overpriced timepieces. Mind you, annual production has grown quite a bit in the past 20-30 years and I don't just mean the ladies 24 quartz model! But the vintage pieces set auction records.
