Way back when there was a company called Blockbuster and an upstart called Netflix was making a dent in their sales, I approached the management with the suggestion that they should equip every store with a bunch of DVD burners and offer vast content to consumers. I envisioned it as a bunch of self-serve kiosks with online access to video trailers and reviews that you could then burn (or ask an employee to do for you) and come back when it was ready. Back then Netflix didn't have a streaming media business. BB didn't take my suggestion and the met their doom.

Now Netflix is a lot smarter than BB. But they are still missing their salvation. They should shift their focus from overpriced content creation to amazing dubbing. Then they can buy great international stories and pass them on to their voice acting teams. They are doing this to some extent, but their dubbing sucks. 3% is a great story that sounds like zombies or sleepwalkers are talking for the actors. The same is true for Money Heist.

Longer term their salvation will come by inserting promotional content that is custom made to each viewer. I was working on a patent for that and know how it should be done. But you need close linkage between the producers and distributors. Netflix is one of the few that can pull that off. But they are clueless about it. Maybe if I run into them I will mention it.
