The Christians were called atheists back then. That was due to their denial of all the other gods of the religions tolerated by the Roman Empire. They also refused to affirm Caesar was a deity. That fulfilled what Jesus taught in Matthew 24:9b "and you shall be hated by all nations for my name's sake."
