The criteria for the Old Folk Portfolio is to keep it simple. The main focus on equities is to have heavy exposure in the Defensive sector, hence the heavy concentration in Consumer Staples and Utilities along with healthcare. You see very little to no exposure in the other sectors and industries.

The second part of that is to use CEF's to help aide in the overall primary objective of the portfolio ... income. Lots of income so that in the event of a market crash or dividend cuts, there will still be plenty of income to rely on.

This portfolio generates 150% more income than is needed in retirement. People don't think twice of holding cash in a savings account for emergencies, or tie it up in CD's, etc. I say a large margin of income safety can remove the need for a larger emergency fund and generate even more cash than a CD can.
