If you, me, and the other guy use three different tools or methods, will we still be able to communicate? Will my India rewrite handle info from your "bigitized" and his brand new systems?

Actually, what you do to the code is meaningless! The only thing that matters is the data.

The process for exchanging data is as simple as matching up what you call it with what they call it. Anything goes. Obviously, the more people involved, the more likelihood some sort of standards committee is involved. In that case, you just make sure you conform.

The ironic thing is that even if you just paid a third-party millions to make your code Y2K compliant, you still may have to spend another few months rewriting your import/export routines to conform to a standard that may also have changed, sometimes, in the case of fixed record layouts, drastically!
