when we had cats, we installed a cat door and
set up a litter box. they preferred to stay inside
except to sun themselves during mild dry days,
except for one. she liked to be outside and
watch. she would never walk across open spaces
only around the perimeter or sit on the porch.
cats know when they feel safe and secure.
there are plenty of indoor activities for cats to use
their hunting skills - like chasing each other and
pouncing on toes! <g>
we installed a somewhat larger door for the dogs
and they use it frequently of course, but they prefer
to be where I am. they follow me in and out constantly
- not through the doggie door <g>
