What information does the government need to send me a tax bill? They know what I make, what I own, how long I owned it, and who I owe money to. They are working with a more complete set of information than the taxpayer is - they own infrastructure and computers that should make this easy. If it isn't easy - congratulations - you get a call to come help them them find out why for matters over $10k with one additional employee looking for each $200k of variance.
