*AV*--I had a great response for you and it got eaten by the electrons. Heck, it was all Bill Gates' fault.
I will be going off line for who knows how long in order to "fix" his screw up. Ever since I bought the new disk drive and loaded it (off the damn CDs no less) with the new Win95, Microsoft Office, and IE4.0, I have had nothing but nightmares with this PC. The system locks up in Win95, constantly kicks me off my modem, and then gives me a stupid .dll error necessitating me having to completely shutdown the system and restart it in order to get the system to recognize the modem.
Speaking of Modems, this one is an external Hayes Accura 56K + Fax, clearly compatible with Win95. You can take this modem and shove in up Bill's (fill in the blank). IF this modem is installed correctly, the best you can get out of it is 24,000 bps (yeah, I know about all the secret locations that need to be changed). IF you install a generic 28,800 modem set of drivers, this thing runs like a champ at 56K+ when connected. The Hayes Smart Message center is great but it seems to be incompatible with Mr. Bill's operating system. Funny thing is that it works like a charm under WindowsNT. Sounds like Mr. Bill has done it again.
The Naturally Speaking software that was almost running at 100% on the other disk drive without IE4.0 and the older Win95b 4.00.1111 rev software does not work at all under this new Win95 setup.
SO-Thanks to blessed Bill and his nefarious scheme to corrupt hard drives, I am wiping this disk clean by reformatting it. I will load the old Win95 CD, the old Office for Win95, and use the IE4.0 CD as a frisbee.
I know - why not go to the webpage for support or call for technical support. Try it and you will see why I don't. They have made is so complex, have you on hold for weeks, and most of them have "never seen this problem before". MSFT could probably save millions of dollars by cutting out tech support and labeling all products with the following warning:
WARNING: You knew what you were doing when you bought this product so do not bother asking for help. Suck it up and live with it. It worked here in the lab so it has to be your fault. We have better things to do (like count our stock net worth) than to handle your insignificant issues.
Kinda reminds me of the old phone company attitude. "We are the phone company. If you don't like us, don't use the phones." Long live the next non Microsoft Operating System whoever it may be!!!!
I don't know when I will be back. Wish me luck and sacrifice something to the PC gods for me.
