I believe "Ubuntu" comes from Bantu meaning a philosophy of sharing. Thus it was chosen as the the name Ubuntu Linux methinks.

There are other examples of collectivist societies in Africa; for example the Sudan -- wasn't there a movie that showed this love called The Lost Boys of Sudan (ummm as opposed to The Proud Boys of Trumpworld); but certainly there is also a tragic history of civil wars and genocides in central and south Africa including wars from the usual murderous suspects from outside in the name of religious dominance from the north (various Christian and Islamic armies.)

The late Manute Bol was a great example of this attitude of sharing and generosity toward his "people."
