Slavery in the U.S. was not officially banned until the 13th Amendment was ratified in December 6, 1865. That is the day slavery ended. Referring to Juneteenth as “National Independence Day” is indefensible as a matter of basic U.S. history. June 19, 1865 was the day slavery ended in the states that rebelled against the U.S. during the Civil War. It is a day to be celebrated. But slavery continued in the north for nearly six more months.
