No one has said anything remotely like that. I've consistently said that we ought to teach American History, and slavery has its place there. But you have to be really careful that the teachers handle it in a highly sensitive matter, as a few misplaced words based on personal animus can wreck a kids perspective on the world for life.

Teachers have a really serious obligation -- which many do NOT carry out -- an obligation to be sure sensitive topics like race and sex are handled in a way that is rational.

Now, we already know what a fucking travesty sex ed in schools has become. If we don't learn from that, as a country we are pretty stupid. So, you don't just send anyone into the classroom to handle these subjects, and sure don't send in a teacher who him or herself carries a chip on the shoulder about what happened to slaves 200 years ago.

Would you allow your children to be taught that their friends had some kind of advantage over them because of something that happened a couple hundred years ago? Wouldn't that actually be a kind of child abuse? I think it would.

How would you make certain these topics were handled with an appropriate level of care? Truth is, I don't think that can be done.
