Or, if the new variant is more virulent but less lethal... the most important part about it might be the different degree in which it elicits successful immune responses in those infected... if that confers a functional immunity... to the one variant, only, or to others ? Did note they are proceeding now with experiments in the Florida Keys... that have them releasing swarms of genetically modified mosquitoes... in order to wage biogenetic warfare against the pests... A very bad idea, IMO... which I've written about before... but when has a bad idea being a bad idea... ever stopped them ?
