If there will be a repeat of the past when a solar flare disrupted the telegraph network - like the Carrington Event which was a powerful geomagnetic storm on September 1–2, 1859, during solar cycle 10 humanity is toast.

Nothing today will actually work as designed except probably the horse and donkey carriages.
In the 1983 I patented some patents against EMP that is very similar to the effects of big solar flares so I am quite familiar with the damage that can be inflicted.

EMP is so damaging to modern world that an agreement was reached that no one will use this type of weapon against each other.

In one experience of such a EMP bomb the electrical power station in Karaganda (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karaganda) Kazakhstan and all underground cables exploded or where burned.

There are various theoretical assumptions on what electrical gadget and power lines will survive and what not, depending on the strength of the EMP
