If you're looking for a Socket-7 board to run a K6, check out the Fic-2012.
It has a 1 MB L2 cache, AGP, and the chipset is optimized for AMD. It's hard to build a system today with the idea of just upgrading to next-gen CPU in 12 months. Chipsets get better, memory gets faster,etc... And ofcourse, they probably won't be compatable with what we have now.

An option for the future would be to network the older machine and use it for lower-end apps. I've using my old P75 as an internet terminal (a poor man's dual monitor set up).
