suggesting that world leaders may have erred during the Cold War by seeming to concede that Taiwan would eventually be reunited with mainland...

I still have no issue with that... as Taiwan being a part of China doesn't alter the fact that Taiwan gets to decide what's best for Taiwan... just as the people in the rest of China should decide for themselves... without the CCP dictating to them...

Not a problem to be patient... and wait for the rest of China, outside of Taiwan, to become more ready to become a modern nation... like Taiwan...

I've always understood that to mean the likelihood that Taiwan will reunite with China... only exists when ALL Chinese people get to vote on who they want governing them... at which point there's no longer any real division that matters...

But, Taiwan going away... or just surrendering to the CCP... ? Have never seen any reason that anyone should expect that to happen...

But, particularly given the example of China's flagrant mismanagement of their agreements re Hong Kong, those who might have missed China's change in direction since Deng... can no longer be blind to the changes that have occurred...

And, clearly they are not... and, in result, Japan will soon have aircraft carriers again...

Not that I've not made it clear, before, that I think XI is a fool... destroying China's potential, and mismanaging China's opportunities, in the vainglorious pursuit of a personal legacy... that history will more likely laugh at than see as accomplishment.

Xi's China... is a condo on Miami Beach... not sloped to shed the rain... wrong in its design and construction, and as inevitable in its outcomes... as it is predictable in the promotion...
