It is true that slavery occurred here and throughout large chunks of the world. And in many places it was far worse than here. There is, in fact, no evidence slaves would have been better off had they avoided the Americas altogether.
That is not condoning or justifying slavery, it is just a statement of fact.
It is wrong and nothing makes it right. But very few people alive today have real ties to slavery. Black or white, we all have ancestry but economically speaking, most of us have not inherited the slightest benefit of any wealth created by slaves. And the lives of blacks today have NOT been affected by slavery Datong back to the war. That simply isn’t reality.
There may be a few black Americans who have identifiable ties. But if you randomly pick 100 black individuals and ask them what slaves, from where, they descended, they cannot answer. If you ask me who my grandparents are I wouldn’t know (I could find their names somewhere). These connections just don’t drag out for long periods.
It is really had for most people to show that they have any substantial connection to four or five generations back,.
So I don’t really get the point of it all other than to try to make some white people feel guilt. |
