lock and key ... no more complicated than that.. Well, locks and keys... the garage door always has its own... and a whole key ring full of keys... as many locks to be managed... for different things... with a couple of master keys for particular sets of locks... And, like our own, the keys don't operate themselves... but have to have a meat bag operating them... so not just about the key... but about the nature of the janitor tasked to carry them... So, a bit more complexity than a casual look might suggest... Including that most keys open a range of different locks... more or less well... while quite a few have variable functions... working one way if X is true... and working the opposite way if Y is true... while X and Y can be variably present... so functions, and rate of function, often depending on concentrations of other things... homeostasis as a concept important to understand... And most locks are opened by a range of keys, more or less well... The overlaps in the lack of specificity is a huge issue... That's what most drug discovery is about... finding keys that are specific enough to a particular lock, only... with high enough function in addressing that one, only, at low enough concentrations, that others aren't impacted... along with a proper ride to get to the scene of the lock... and a get-away plan that doesn't involve long vacations, detours or gunfights on the way out...
