Tom, Thank you for your message about Leslie. I was deeply saddened by news of her death, as were you.

When she was still very much alive, I learned about her husband, who built boats and sailed them. I sent her this poem, which was my take on their passions were for each other despite his love for boat building and her love for poetry. :

The Poet’s Husband

I can’t deny the others

You smell them on my clothing

They who await my chisel and my plane

Lovers who leave their chafe

Their scars

Take their fingertips

You don’t forgive that

Yet you tender me back to them

For your own reasons

The sculling in your eyes

Betrays your own lovers

The king’s words

You mark them with the broad arrow

The chosen few

You weave them through the fairlead

You trim the backstay and the forestay

They drive your ship into the pinch

And you sail away

And you sail back wing on wing

To tender me

Once again
