I saw the news and my immediate reaction was negative. It seems to me that Intel is now to chip makers what Novel Netware was to servers and networking: A once mighty enterprise still with critical mass that is out of tune with the spirit of the time that is not willing to do what is necessary to flourish again.

There is a book by a famous IT strategy consultant, "Strategy and the Fat Smoker." The point of the story is that if you are a fat smoker, then the solution is obvious: lose weight and quit smoking. But implementing that obvious solution is not easy even if you know the way. IMO, Intel is the figurative fat smoker.
