SAY WHAT?? Dell calls it a USR Modem, BUT 3Com calls it a Dell modem!!
I think the run around is making me dizzy.
My e-mail to USR:
I read this on your website and in advertising elsewhere: "The U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem supports Caller ID and distinctive ring, where available. Assign separate phone numbers for incoming faxes, data and voice calls, all on one phone line. And the modem can signal your pager when fax or phone messages arrive. The 56K Voice Faxmodem comes with Symantec WinFaxT PRO Version 8.0 fax communications software and TalkWorksT speakerphone, voice mail and fax on demand software - everything you need to set up your message center. Plus a CD-ROM called U.S. Robotics ConnectionsT. Connections includes software from Internet access providers, special offers for U.S. Robotics modem owners, 3Com product and support information and more." 3com.com; I have a Sportster 56K internal modem in one of my PCs and a 28.8K in another. So when I ordered a new PC from Dell computers I upgraded the modem from a Win-modem to a USR 56K Voice Faxmodem. I first confirmed with the salesperson that the modem had all the capabilities as stated above. Well, when the PC arrived and I'd finished setting it up I found that there was no documentation or software included. I called Dell today and talked with a sales supervisor who told me the modem was capable of all the things USR claims and the Dell salesperson had told me, however I was informed I'd have to buy software to get it to work. Since the Dell PC ships with Win95 & Word 97 I'd only need to buy software to get the voice function to work. The supervisor went on to say it was the fault of USR because they quit shipping the software with the modems. I find this attitude akin to selling cars without tires! I must say I don't know who is telling the truth, is it the USR advertisin g or the Dell person? I don't know! Could you please clear this issue up ASAP so I will know whether to return the product to Dell in the short time allowed, or expect the software to be shipped to me promptly. To be fair with you - be advised I am sharing this situation with other 3Com investors on the Silicon Investor 'Net site and sending a copy to Dell customer relations. I thank you in advance for your prompt reply.
------------------------------------------ USR's reply: Hello 3Com Customer,
Thank you for contacting 3COM Online Support. I understand you are having a problem with the lack of software shipped with your Dell modem.
I see you have questions about your Dell modem and software. 3Com sells certain computer manufacturers the modem technology which they customize and include in their computers as part of their system. However, 3Com does not support those modems. The PC manufacturer is responsible to its customer. It is up to the PC manufacturer to provide the repair, upgrades or updates, and support for the modems they include with their systems. 3Com modems which are included with a computer manufacturer's system are built to the computer manufacturer's specifications, and are not the same as standard Sportsters. I notice that this modem will be supported by Dell. Please contact them directly for support with or questions about this product. I have included some of Dell's contact information below.

The modem you are speaking of that comes with WinFax PRO software is our newest modem, the 56K USB ready Sportster Voice modem. This is the only modem we ship with the software you mention. This modem is an external unit with USB capabilities as well as the features of our standard voice modem. If you have any further questions about our modems, please feel free to contact us. I apologize for any confusion.

I know I thought what you thought I'd think, but why'd you think I'd think that thought unless you thought I'd think it? |
