Upbeat Outlook From Cisco Lifts Entire Networking Sector
interactive.wsj.com

.....One of the bigger pieces of news to come out of Cisco's conference call
was the company's decision to allocate considerably more resources for an
aggressive push into the voice/data integration market.

In a research note, Deutsche Morgan Grenfell analyst Noel Lindsay said
Cisco has stated that it would like to enter into a partnership with Lucent
Technologies Inc. (LU) or Northern Telecom Ltd. (NT) to reach this
market in North America, much as it has partnered with Alcatel Alsthom
(ALA) in Europe and NEC Corp. (NIPNY) in Japan.

Lindsay said Cisco may be indicating that it is prepared to attack this
market alone in North America if necessary.

Cisco said it sees a total voice/telecom market of about $90 billion, made
up largely of carrier and Internet service provider customers. Lindsay
believes Cisco's push into this new market will help it continue its growth.

"At this point, Cisco no longer faces any real competitive challenges within
the data-networking market," he wrote. "In contrast, Cisco's biggest risk is
that it needs to enter new markets that can support its historical growth
rates. ... Since there aren't many new market opportunities that are large
enough to achieve this objective, it would seem that the voice/telecom
market is one of Cisco's only options."

Also in a bullish sign for the entire networking industry, Cisco said it plans
to hire 1,000 to 1,500 new employees over the next three to four months,
including people to work in both research and development and in sales.

In addition, the company told analysts to expect a 50- to 70-basis- point
increase in both research and development expenses and in sales and
marketing costs over the next three to five quarters.
