Pugs,

What gives you the authority to take someone's life regardless of whether or not they are trying to take yours?? Two wrongs don't make a right by your logic.

My logic dictates that it is better to be judged by 12 than to be carried by 6.

My perspective also leads me to suggest that since the only authority a government should have is that of its governed citizenry, I have empowered that gov't to post-facto defend the rest of society from the individual that I was unable to defend myself from.

(ie: I would have killed the bast*rd had he not got the drop on me, so in my absence I authorize the gov't to do it for me and for my fellow members of society.)

When we have a society that is unwilling to seek justice and vengeance for those fellow innocent members who are preyed upon and victimized, that, I suggest, is a sign that the end of civilization grows near.

Don't know if you're in Sci-Fi, but I used to read a lot of J.P. Hogan. It interesting, well-done, and has a philosophic bent that commands maximum respect for individual rights.

As for gov't having too much power, you have no disagreement from me. Steps must be taken to preserve a presumption of evidence in those cases where there are no credible eyewitnesses. But surely you wouldn't disagree that a premeditated coldly calculated murder case where you have irrefutable evidence justifies the death penalty

Regards,

Ron
