Sun Unveils Line Of Storage Products

Martin J. Garvey

Sun Microsystems last week debuted a line of storage devices, software, and
services for its Intelligent Storage Network architecture. The line includes
Sun's first data-sharing device, as well as its first storage products that
support HP-UX, Windows NT, and mainframe systems.

The data-sharing device, the Sun StorEdge A7000 Intelligent Storage Server,
is a product of Sun's acquisition last fall of storage vendor Encore Computer
Systems.

The line also includes the StorEdge A5000 Array, a total Fibre Channel
solution from the drive to the hub. Sun is deciding on a Fibre Channel switch
vendor, such as Ancor Communications or Brocade Communications
Systems, to replace the hubs on the A5000.

The SCSI-based StorEdge A3000 and StorEdge A1000 support Sun's
Solaris, HP-UX, and NT. Prices start at $286,000 for the A7000, $35,000
for the A5000, and $89,000 for the A3000. Pricing hasn't been set for the
A1000. The A7000 and A5000 are shipping now; the A3000 and A1000
are due later this quarter.
