LOL!!!
Yeah. Most of yours... clearly making the point re why many engineers don't understand biology at all...
My view is different... both as grounded and based in biology, first, with work history addressing biohazards, vectors, and control... but also doing "tech" and managing clean spaces... before working in a lab that did both... testing and qualification / certification / mitigation / remediation of both semiconductor and bio-hazard clean spaces...
The physics is what it is in relation to particulates and their elimination... particle functions vary... still mostly a statistical exercise... control and protocols in tech not really all that different than in high level bio (except... one way vs two way risks, and no one ever dies if they make a mistake... but, larger in scale) But, outside of a clean space... most biological systems tend to not be "ruined" by exposures to... dust storms... smoke from campfires... springtime pollen storms... or any of the rest of what you experience while living in a hugely variable world always far outside tolerances of a clean room. We're well adapted to it...
The expectation that exposure to a virus particle probably does to a human what an statistically relevant excess of contaminates does to processes required to be conducted in a clean room environment... ? Silicon fabrication... has no defensive mechanisms... other than the artificial management reducing risks.
This is what the real science suggests.
(1) Viruses travel globally. Take your mask off when you get home... what does that do?
It leaves all the viruses in the world right where they were before you took your mask off.
(2) If you are exposed to a high concentration of viruses, you will be covered in them. Do you take an "anti virus shower" before you get home and then take off your mask?
IF ? First, people have this amazing thing... called skin. It keeps most of what's on the outside... outside... and most of what's on the inside, inside... and that's mostly good enough to prevent random viruses in the environment, kept on the outside by your skin, from mattering at all... and with that... having no impact at all on the massive number of them already cohabiting on and inside you...
Meet the trillions of viruses that make up your virome
The only serious part of yours... applies when, in rare circumstances, you are exposed to abnormal and life threatening risks... as is true in an isolation ward treating an Ebola patient ? (Or, a high level bio-hazard lab doing gain of function research ?) Then, yes, it matters that you establish solidly functional protocols and follow best practices that enable you to get in and out of protective gear without the gear itself transmitting what's on the outside of the protective gear... to what is supposed to stay isolated and safe on the inside of it...
It is generally recommended by experts that when you get home and take your mask off... you should probably not lick it clean... or try to suck all the dust off the outside of it... ?
And, common sense matters... You wear a mask that works... N95 or better... for protection ? But, then, don't take care of it... use the same one all the time... for a year ? Would you do that with your underwear?
Prudence suggests changing your underwear once in a while... and, given a prudent bit of planning ahead for some future Armageddon... maybe keeping a spare package on hand ?
Maybe... don't bother wearing a mask when risks are low... wear one only where (or, when) it is more likely useful... modify your choices as risks change... and be a bit more careful in what you do after being out and about when that might mean you were exposed... as some idiot who was coughing and hacking in the grocery... bumped into you ?
Then, setting that mask aside for a time (how long will virus remain viable ?) ... showering and changing clothes... laundering them... isn't irrational paranoia... nor is doubling up on the C and D that day ?
Given the LOW level of the current risks... Ebola driven perfection in risk minimization is not the goal ?
If you are aware of the risks, and take good care of yourself (A,C,D, Zn, anti-inflammatory herbs, have preventive small molecules if you need them, etc.) your immune system is probably up to the challenge... so all you are doing in having functional protective gear is biasing things a bit to not have it be challenged ? (3) And this one is more then a "suggests" its in a book written by a real expert... We dont know the propagation system of the influenza (including Corona and derivative) viruses. I have not read this book but Ivor Cummings mentions it. On the epidemiology of influenza | Virology Journal | Full Text (biomedcentral.com)
An old book about what we didn't know... alters what is known about biology and physics... and reason... how? There is no real magic or mystery. The source of the problem... serially revealed in medicine... is ignorance and a lack of reason... along with sloth... and experts willing to assert authority they shouldn't.
The article is from 2008... and is now outdated... as already detailed here... because of the discovery of the nature of the lazy errors being propagated by health care providers as misinformation about the "knowns" in transmission modes. The health care providers have long claimed... (not science) that flu could not possibly be transmitted through airborne means... and "it's a mystery"... for the same bogus reasons they came up with the fiction of 6 meters as the Covid "safe" limit for social distancing ? "Pull it out of your ass... call it good... and label it "the science".
Told that story here already... about the history of tuberculosis... the magical 5 micron size limit for everything being determined from a SINGLE study that CORRECTLY determined that as the threshold in the case of tuberculosis... Here it is again in the first two popular media recountings that pop up, note carefully, published in MAY of 2020:
The 60-Year-Old Scientific Screwup That Helped Covid Kill
WHO Was Wrong About Coronavirus Being Airborne, But Why?
That one study done "worked" for better understanding and preventing TB... but it didn't mean or intend you could generalize everything from that one study... creating a magical 5 micron size limit for everything ?
But, that is what they did...
And, note... Forbes WRONGLY blames SCIENCE... for delivering a success others misapplied... while ignoring the larger medical establishment being lazy ass morons pretending to be experts ?
That's what monopoly and controlled markets creates...
Why was no other work done, following up on that work... for many decades ? If there is anything useful that comes out of Covid... it should be less about "OK, finally fixed that"... and more about... "we need to focus on fixing what clearly was systemically broken that allowed that drift for 60 years... for no reason"... while experts claimed to be asserting "the science"... when there really was no science ? That's what needs fixing... is the surplus of hubris inherent in the medical establishments baseless assertions of expertise.
So, what might you expect to follow from medical professionals ? This from the "well respected" end of the spectrum... published in JULY of 2020... suggests, to me, zero reason anyone should respect them ?
The Experiment that Proved Airborne Disease Transmission
That missive... seems it does far less in providing information than the popular media already had... but, perhaps, it provides more than intended in pointing out the origin of the problem ? That vapid retelling fails to inform... but gladly seeks to claim credit... for pointing out to others things they clearly already knew ?
Providers... are mostly not innovators. They're busy with patient care... not thinking or solving unsolved problems. The solutions they provide through "access"... are mostly not their own ideas. But, they both want to be and believe themselves to be "the experts"... when they really are not ? And, the problem only grows worse in aggregation as bureaucrats are selected from among the "qualified" population of the self promoted who are least qualified... but the best self promoters ?
That's how you get a clueless moron like a Fauci... making decisions he's not qualified to make... Granted... its one anecdotal instance... (consistent with other history IMO) but, given only that... I'd choose to get my health care from Forbes or Wired long before I'd chose to seek help from "the famous Johns Hopkins". Medicine today seems it has been spectacularly dumbed-down ? To what might we attribute that precipitous decline... into a failing reliance on past glories ? Having learned all that, this year... recasts everything said before not just about Covid... but also the flu ?
Also from JULY of 2020... a better survey article from NIH covering revisions of "the understanding now" :
Particle sizes of infectious aerosols: implications for infection control
Because they were simply wrong in their assumptions... which they asserted as "fact"... and it seems no one ever thought it might be useful to simply do the work required to find out... instead of claiming to know to a certainty... stuff you really knew nothing about ?
"It's a mystery"? Real science has an answer for that... but, it doesn't come looking for you.
There's a recurrent theme appearing here... in the scientific incompetence of the medical professions paired with their over-reliance on assertions of authority... based in hubris... if not outright BS ? |
