The 1.0+GHz processor IBM demonstrated today IS very important. It is an indication that the technology for building 1000 MHz microprocessors for general usage is that much closer to reality. More importantly the chip was manufactured using the cheaper.25 um technology same feature size as 604e and does not require .15um as previously reported.

It's important to keep in mind that the chip IBM demonstrated today is not really a full-functioned PowerPC processor. It does show that much of the technology required to built a 1.0GHz general purpose PPC is already in place.

What I'm looking forward to hearing from IBM is the 500MHz PPC750 with copper interconnect currently in the pipeline.
