Afghanistan's quick fall is easy to understand.

The public there was probably 90% behind the Taliban before the US invasion, with the Kabul residents most likely opposed. After 20-years of constant war, the public is still 90% behind the Taliban.

Most people there just want peace and security. They don't want Western values, mores, or government. The men certainly don't. Probably 3/4 of the women don't either. It is our arrogance that makes us believe everyone should want to emulate our way of life.

The Afghan population is tribal, much like Libya is. To expect a strong central government to take hold and govern with authority in Western fashion was a pipe dream. Most of the people in the now disbanded Afghan army were doing it just for the money, not the ideology. Basically anything that was done for the old Afghan government was a function of money, not ideology. That's a recipe for failure.
