You know how we all tend to hold on to a losing position because deep inside we don't want to admit to being wrong and we hope that the stock will bounce back? Well military adventures are like that too, only so much worse. Instead of just losing money, you are also losing lives. And instead of just admitting to yourself that you made a mistake and taking the loss on your own, you have to admit that you got somebody's son killed for nothing. It is very hard to just leave. You want their deaths to mean something. You can't just face the families and say, "sorry you lost your son. We really thought it would be over in a year." And just like the trader who becomes an investor and holds on to his losing position, you end up adding to the pile of bodies. And each loss makes it so much harder to pack up and leave.

Side note - this logic is what kept Japan in the war long after they knew they had lost the war. They could not bear the shame of accepting defeat even though they knew it was inevitable. They had to lose so many more lives so that it could be obvious to everyone that they fought harder than anyone could have expected of them.

War is such a terrible thing and I so very much hate it.
