DDI Corp's (9433.T) honorary chairman Kazuo Inamori said on Monday DDI would be willing to adopt the widely recognised W-CDMA third-generation cellular phone standard if the technology was free.

"We are willing to adopt the W-CDMA standard and are ready to invest in the facilities in 2000 or afterwards provided the technology is open and fair competition is secured," Inamori told reporters.

Fair enough too. I've been thinking of adopting Lexus as my third generation transportation auto standard provided they supply it free. I'll pay for the steel, glass, parts and labor if they use their know- how at no charge to design and build it.

Inamori is just talking intellectual property rather than material property - being perhaps unable to see the similarities between the two. It's such fun watching everyone waiting to see what Qualcomm will do with its patents - will they gift it to the GSM crowd, license free and thumb their nose at their early supporters who carried the can for 9 years? Unlikely. Best to leave the 3G on the shelf for another few months and quietly go on developing their own 3G solution then offer it on a royalty basis to the UMTL crowd. Of course with real-time pricing built in = multimedia phones are going to be frequency greedy and frequency is far from free yet so "CURRENT PRICE IS ..." will
be an essential customer service right there on the display.

Valueman, you left off a component of my negotiation with the parking attendant - I'll phone his boss on my cdmaOne phone which I'll rent at LAX [hopefully] and tell him the guy should be at the beach on reduced pay while the parking lot is empty.

Looking forwards to visiting Qualcomm again. I haven't been there since June 1994.

I'll bring a half-G of sherry but expect to do some fleecing when in USA rather than supply local sheep. Tarken will probably have a red , yellow, black and green crocheted hat on but I'm sure we'll be conspicuous in some way. Probably looking lost and confused.

Told you so - years ago

Remember:
Dow 16000 Feb 2002 [predicted in 1995 at 4600 as was 8000 for now]

Hoping to see some of you in San Diego.

PS: I hear Globalstar only have 4 solid motors on the bird and it is not very stable sitting by itself. They doubt if they will even roll the tower back. 24 hour turnaround with Fri looking better. Windy as Wellington.

Bernie S. plans to swoop in to watch the launch. Good for him!
