that is way too much water... you can get water poisoning .. (loss of electrolytes)

I drink about 3 litres daily (so your friend was drinking in 3 hours what I drink in a day) and I am very active... but always include an electrolyte rehydration drink or lots of fruit.. ... I may drink as much as 4L in summer when doing a lot of heavy outdoor work...

My water intake is to combat kidney stones... (calcium oxalate variety) and osteoporosis... So far so good... lots of D3/K2 exercise and real food :)

meat intake much lower than before.. but I kinda follow paleo thought on diet .. Our bodies took 3 million years or more to evolve and agriculture etc tried to change our diet in 10 thousand years...and hugely in the last few hundred...
