We've debated this before in the past and we are at opposite sides of the spectrum so I'll keep this brief and don't really want to get into a long back and forth.
Your game theory stuff and views on socialistic good for all "ASSUMES" a pool of educated players that all have good intentions. In the REAL WORLD, this is faaaar from reality. If I'm the evil CEO that comes up with a high demand widget that makes me a fortune but because of your win/win game theory decide to split the profits 50/50 with the poor uneducated line worker that makes the widget, we each have 50 cents of the dollar it made. All is well. Then I will likely set some of that aside for a rainy day, maybe to cover unexpected expenses, for my retirement etc. The line worker on the other hand will blow it all on a tattoo, beer, hookers etc. Then when the unexpected expenses show up, they will demand I give them my savings.
I see it every day and read about it every day. The lottery winner that's broke a few years later. The actors/singers that blow their fortunes and blame the managers etc instead of realizing that the mansion in Hollywood required a massive staff of maids, groundskeepers, pool boys, maintenance men etc.
If any of us on this board get money back
from the IRS, we probably put it towards next year's taxes, in the bank etc. The other half of society blows it immediately on a new phone, concert tickets, down payment on a car they won't be able to make the rest of the payments on.
Until everyone is educated in basic finance, learns how to critically think and can exercise self control, rainbows and unicorn sharing will never work. We have been donating money for Africa for decades. It just keeps getting worse over there. We got rid of apartheid and south Africa went from a paradise to a place where you need flamethrowers on your car to survive, Mining companies shut down and left etc.
Detroit, St Louis, Atlanta etc are like militarized zones after dark. I grew up in St Louis and can barely recognize it. I saw first hand "empathy" policies like the disastrous Pruitt-Igoe housing project.
I am so sick and tired of throwing good money after bad when it is painfully obvious that these policies have never worked, won't work now and will never work in the future. I fear we are fast approaching an Atlas Shrugged point where we need to find a safe getaway spot and start over by invitation only and leave the bleeding hearts to deal with the people that just take, take and take. Education is not "cool" but being dumb, stoned and drunk are. Singers, sports stars and actors, many of whom are certifiably nuts, are paid more than teachers, scientists and doctors. It seems everyone wants to be a rapper but only a few want to cure cancer. Our society is broken.
On a similar note, do you think people can critically think? Read some of the threads here on SI that discuss Covid. There isn't enough aluminum in the world for the hats they want to wear as they take advice about drugs from some guy living in his mom's basement instead of doctors. Many are the same people that before Covid were posting various but constant conspiracy theories. It scares me that these people are free and walking around and some post pictures of their firearm arsenals. They live among us, breed and vote.
