I don't doubt that game theory leads to ways to maximize winning for the participants, or some subset of them. I'm not sure that I agree that that leads to the good of society. I'm not exactly advocating the Star Trek mantra of "the good of the many vs good of the few" but there is an echo to that sentiment. I guess it's because so many of the games played in the real world involve people who are ignoring the game because they have other things to do, things that in themselves are useful to society but not rewarded by the game.
