Most subscriptions are a sucker bet. They are based on a model that you will be a power user instead of a regular user.

In a business context, a subscription swaps capex for opex. If you view it this way, then you can better decide if you should subscribe.

I may justifiably subscribe to a music service if the cost of carrying and managing my music is greater than owning it. In my particular case, I've chosen to subscribe to a storage service and upload my entire music library (~5k songs) to it. I get all the benefits of a music subscription at a lower cost.

When I was younger I subscribed to a shelter service, aka renting an apartment. It was cheaper than the interest + maintenance that I'd have to pay if I owned it. This math changed at the bottom of the housing crisis, especially since I managed to lock in a variable interest rate a full percentage bellow the bank's prime.

Looking at subscription through the lens of capex vs opex helps keep one on the right track.
