A lot has to do with like Tigerpaw said too though. Society has a short attention span and gets spoonfed their feelings, opinions etc.
To take your pollution point as an example. Yes, dumping filth all over was bad. No argument there. However, fixes back then were thought out, planned and implemented in a mostly sensible way. Now days it's a joke. A topic comes up, everyone screams for a fast fix, and some knee jerk reaction fix is put in place that often just makes things worse or is just a bandaid fix.
Glass bottles that were mostly recycled replaced with plastic that just gets dumped. Then plastic is bad so we ban straws but order meals online to be delivered in plastic containers. Smog in California that is reduced by adding MTBE to gasoline that burns and then pollutes the groundwater. EVs to replace ICE engines that will require strip mining vast amounts of land to get the minerals required for the batteries. Etc etc etc....
No one thinks things through anymore.
Heck, I have all kinds of projects I want to do. I sit on my porch everyday and ponder and plan but constantly find potential pitfalls that require my research. Pinterest is probably the easiest example. It's full of projects that are popular and look great when first completed. However, almost every one I see is a disaster waiting to happen. Most won't last six months or will be a pain to maintain. However the site remains popular because most don't see it. I'm done trading today. Logging off, good luck.
