ZD net benchmarks and lies...

Ken,

Saying "SGI" is faster/slower means nothing.

I think the worst sin made by PC Mag is comparing
the latest dual-processor $17K Intergraph system with
a 18 months old uniprocessor from SGI (O2 R10K) which
is sharing main memory with the graphic subsystem.
This sharing has great advantages in terms of being
able to support "unlimited" texturing memory, for example,
but it is not necessarily the best performing architecture
on the PC Mag selected benchmarks.

The entry point of the SGI Octane is about $17K I believe
(someone from SGI can probably give the exact details)
and it would have made a much more reasonable comparison
vis a vis the Intergraph machine due to several reasons:
1) It has a much better CPU<->memory interface
than the O2.
2) It has a crossbar switch that avoids contentions
between general purpose memory and graphics
3) It is a dual processor machine as well.

Then they say "it happened: WinTel systems perform better"
a gross generalization based on questionable data points.

Puting the OCTANE is that race would have won it all the
top spots in performance by far.

Sadly, such articles create a sentiment and mind share
that don't help SGI of course...
