Kevin,

I am not sure what Compaq has up it sleeve regarding Dec's Alpha chip. IMHO I look for Compaq to allow continued development as they try to take a larger share in the total workstation market. The margins are much higher in workstations and right now HP has the market lead when using combined UNIX and Windows NT systems. HP's UNIX's systems use their RISC processors (I believe PA series if my memory is correct) while their Window NT based systems are using Intel cpu's. I think in the near term look for Compaq to try to do the same but just substituting the alpha as their Unix processor. As for the long term I believe they will take a wait and see attitude and see how the cpu industry and software (especially OS's) evolves once the Merced is released by Intel.
