In a very real way we've spent 20 years recreating American social division in Afghanistan.

The Taliban want to get back at the urban elite by imposing rural stone-age sharia values on the millions of elite urban citizens.

Taliban soldiers are from rural regions where people live in tents and mud huts without medical care or other technology. The $2,000 a year the Taliban has paid their soldiers is more than double what they could make farming opium back home.

Rural soldier recruits, for both the Taliban and the former government didn't know the names of colors or how to count. Much of the US training of the Afghan military was teaching them how to count and to read and write.

The rural Taliban despise the "urban elite" in Kabul and other cities where technology like cell phones, electricity and flush toilets are widely available. They want to impose their backward rural religious culture on the entire nation, just like the Republican Taliban is trying to do in America.
