Kevin, Cpq plans to increase sales from 25 bill to 50 bill by 2000. Purchasing dec gets them half way there. Cpq must feel comfortable about the mid & low end penitration and unwilling or unable to grow the high end market within the time frame buying dec fitsCPQ total enterprise. Pieffer see a company laden with fat I assume dec's employees will be trimmed form 58K to about 25 by 2000. As for alpha with cpq controling alpha it can take the lion share of the production and control the allocation to others or make it propritary and freeze it's competitior out of UNIX. a nice cardhand to play. for 6 billion more they can pick up amd and control high and low allocations to competitors and exert leverage on Intel at a cheap price. For 3 billion they can take controlling interest and provide some five year money to AMd to finish off fab 25 and Dresden. Pieffer could transfer alpha to amd in exchange for some of the three bill in effect become a equity joint venture partner with amd. Sanders could then run semi while pieffer kept his eye on box making.
