<<The "conspiracy theorists" like me were derided when we said Tepco would dump radioactive water into the Pacific. Now they want to build a tunnel to speed up the dumping.>>

The term "Conspiracy Theorist" (as you probably know) was invented by the CIA to help cover up the JFK assassination and the fact the final bullet that killed him entered from the front of his head, not the back. That fact is indisputable.

A lot of posters have recently been talking about "They" and "Them", and who are these entities or people ? I have given that some thought... imho it's most people who live on their own island, tax haven, "enclave" who has more than a few million dollars to protect. You can be sure they are communicating and plotting to protect and enhance their fortunes. Don't call it a conspiracy though. It's not like they have a common interest or anything -g-

Back to Fukashima...
Yes. To deal with it sensibly, a risk assessment need to be made. It wont be perfect, but a risk, once fully understood, is part of the best outcome solution. Of course, it would have been nice if the generators had started up when the Tsunami hit Fukashima, but the corrupt company stopped the maintenance. The the Tsunami stuck as if that was going to be an unexpected event in Japan... Hindsight 20/20.

Just to keep the emotion out of it, I will mention an issue in my neck of the woods.

So there is about 30 odd tonnes of it out there. How much of a risk is it? No idea... It maybe less of a risk then some of the other munitions dumped around the UK coastline since WW2.
Most people I speak to... lived here all their lives, dont even know about it. They think Sellafield is the only issue.

I took a course on nuclear safety with the then NRPB in 1985, completed a week or two just before Chernobyl. The stories of what really has gone on in the past is ... well... not good.

It's a matter of encouraging open debate, evaluating the risks, and then determining the best course of action. If we do need to go pick all the discarded chit up, then innovation and open debate may make the job far easier and cheaper too. If the project is presented as a WIN to the MOD and armed forces, it encourages a positive result. No point going into loggerheads with them.

There is one and only solution to make the UK an economic powerhouse once again imho. Reverse the fishing policies for the last 100 years and copy Icelands model. Turn the UK into a gigantic organic wild "fish farm". We have the waters, the sea areas around the UK, to do it. In that outcome every single piece of crap we have dropped on the ocean floor may need to get picked up. ... but it would only be done if everyone wanted to do that, including the military and industry. To me it sounds like a productive way to utilize our combined energies. Job creation and all that.

But burying it, or leaving it, or dropping it into even deeper water may be the best option too. It's a matter of careful evaluation.

I suspect the Fukashima and Tepco situation may need a lot of open discussion and evaluation too.

Just my two cents. -g-
