When I first moved to America (33 years ago) I was amazed at how people only defined themselves as either "conservative" or "liberal".....no other labels really. When people would ask me what I was I would gleefully and honestly reply "I'm a hippie". I quickly learned that they were really just defining their political affiliation. It's definitely the result of a 2 party system IMHO. Very much a my team right or wrong mentality. Where I grew up there were 3 main parties and several smaller parties that could yield influence by way of forming coalitions. It's less stable but it doesn't create such a bipolar ecosystem.

The definitions and policies by which each defined themselves have morphed immensely in my time here. There was much more commonality back then. The main difference I see is that the fringes on each side are now starting to dominate the landscape and redefining the two camps.....social media IMO is the main catalyst for this happening. The "conservative" camp to me are just downright scary - they've been hijacked by an authoritarian leaning cult from what I can see. The "liberal" camp are falling under the spell of this crazy new woke culture. The former are much more dangerous to me and have a wider reach from what the polling numbers show. Talk of stolen elections in the face of no evidence whatsoever and a frightening wave of new legislation to suppress voting have all the earmarks of a growing fascist movement. I'm genuinely troubled by what I'm seeing.....
